Do your face a favor and head to your bathroom, grab your makeup wipes and toss them into the trash! Okay, okay...you can save them to wipe down your vanity countertop.
Have you ever wondered why your makeup just doesn't look the way you want it to? Well, it's probably your skin. Good skin is the best foundation for a flawless makeup application.
Did you know that the inflammation and skin issues that your are having are probably 75% caused by the use of makeup wipes. Wipes have harsh chemicals and cause you to pull and tug on your skin which leads to premature aging and inflammation. Girl, just stop!
The best advice I can provide to begin the "your skin but better" journey is to begin and stick to a routine.
Let's begin...I have combination skin (an oily T-zone and normal to dry perimeter). I tend to go for products that are more hydrating rather than drying Hint: If you skin is too dry, it will overproduce oil which can cause outbreaks and 9/10 you are causing your skin to be surface dry.
Here's a few questions to ask yourself when looking for a good routine:
1) What is your skin type?
2) What are your biggest concerns?
3) What are your goals?
Please be aware that skincare is not one-size-fits all because, you know..life happens and you must adjust. You have to be intentional and patient for results and be aware of ingredients that you might cause your irritation and any allergic reactions.
Step 1: Cleanse/double
It's not a shock that the first stop to great skin is to wash your face and NEVER, EVER sleep in your makeup. Cleaners are used to remove dirt, oil buildup and makeup
Why double cleanse you ask? Using an oil based cleanser first aides in the breakdown of dirt, oil and makeup which allow the cleanser to penetrate and doing its job.
Pictured below (oil cleansers/makeup removal):
Formula 10.0.6 Bare Face Beauty Skin-Hydrating Cleansing Oil- this stuff is amazing especially since it is only $8.99. It removes the most stubborn making and is gentle for enough for the eye area
Boscia MakeUp-BreakUp Cool Cleansing Oil- contains anti-aging ingredients and will leave your skin dirt free and refreshed (plus it has cooling sensation that is super relaxing)
Pictured below (cleanse your skin):
Fresh Soy Face Cleanser- great for all skin types and is gentle enough for even sensitive skin
Tatcha The Deep Cleanse, -has exfoliating ingredients t and can be used daily
Too Faced Hangover Wash the Day Away- contains hyaluronic acid (more on this miracle ingredient later) to hydrate while providing a great clean
How you do know which wash to use? Remember as mentioned before, #beintentional with your skincare. For example if you are having a breakout use a wash with salicylic acid. My all time favorite one is the Murad Clarifying Cleanser.
Step 2: Toner
The purpose of a toner is to balance your skin's pH, remove any remaining residue and prep your skin for other products.
Pictured below:
Fresh Rose & Hyaluronic Acid Deep Hydration Toner- This toner is GORGEOUS and contains real rose petal. #stop It is non-stripping and provides extra hydration (I am on my THIRD bottle of this liquid gold)
Ole Henriksen Glow2OH Dark Spot Toner- aids in fading dark spots and uneven skin tones
Step 3: Serum(s)
Serums are used to treat and prep skin, i.e. hydration, dark spots and can be layered. You want to layer them in order of the most water based to least. I prefer ones that contain hyaluronic acid as an active ingredient. This substance helps aids your skin in hydration and helps fights signs of aging. Read about its other benefits here.
Pictured below:
Too Faced Hangover Good in Bed Hydrating Serum-improves skin's texture and is chalked full of vitamins and other good-for-your skin ingredients (I am on my second bottle of this!)
Treatments (ingredients used to target specific skin concerns) - Do NOT let the price scare you away from Vitamin C! Vitamin C is something that EVERYONE needs. It helps brigetn your skin making it more even-toned, aid you in becoming more comfortable without foundation. Here is a dupe to try.
Pictured below:
The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid-used for anti-aging, applied after water based products
The Ordinary Caffeine Solution- reduces puffiness and dark circles
The Ordinary Niacinamide- helps de-clog pores and reduces sebum (oil) production
Are you still there?!?! The best is yet to come! #keepreading Your skin will thank you!
Step 4: Moisturizer
These products are used to help seal in moisture (main types are gel and cream).
You should have a daytime and nighttime moisturizer and sometimes even a Summer and Winter one. Your daytime moisturizer is used to protect/prep your skin and the nighttime product is used to repair. They can also be used for priming your face before makeup (not a fan of that BUT let's save that for another post)
Pictured below:
Philosophy Ultimate Miracle Worker Multi-Rejuvenating Cream SPF 30 (daytime)- This cream is used for daytime and is a cult favorite of many BUT with a price tag of $75 I only purchased on sale and found it to be just OKAY. It was nothing that was revolutionary for me and I will not be repurchasing. If you have mature skin, this might a better product for you since it specialized in addressing signs of aging.
Too Faced Hangover Pillow Cream (nighttime)- This stuff is bomb.com and instantly provides a glow to your skin. It contains stardust which is full of amino acids and iron.
Clinique Moisture Surge (daytime)- This is my go-to summer moisturizer since it is gel based. It is super light and keeps you hydrated while not being too sticky
Fresh Rose Deep Hydration Moisturizer (daytime)- this one contains, (yea, you guessed it-hyaluronic acid) which helps to keep you moisturized all day. I use this one year round and it provides me a boost of hydration on my dry days.
Step 5: SPF (daytime)
SPF is used to protect your skin from harmful UVB rays (30 is the recommended skin protection factor) They have a wide range of types- tinted, mineral, spray, etc.
Pictured below:
Too Faced Hangover Good to Go Skin Protecting SPF 25 Moisturizer- I layer this on top of my moisturizer on days that I need extra moisture Tip: this works great as a makeup primer as well.
Step 6: Lip treatments (all day, everyday)
Don't neglect your lips! Keep them soft and kissable with these products.
Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask- has vitamin C and leave them super soft for the next morning #justbuyit
Fresh Sugar Coconut Hydrating Lip Balm- who doesn't want their lips smelling like coconut with a natural shine
Suggested Night Time Routine:
Double Cleanse (removing makeup/build-up with an oil cleanser and then following with a traditional cleanser)
Toner
Treatment
Serum
Eye cream
Moisturizer (creams
Lip treatment
